A bunion (or hallux valgus) is a bony bump on the outside base of the big toe that grows gradually, causing misalignment, and sometimes pain and swelling. Contrary to popular belief, the condition is mainly genetic and does not necessarily result from wearing small or pinching shoes. Over 500 patients a year have bunion surgery at HSS.
