In April of 2019, after a rocket injury in the military, I came to the United States seeking treatment for bilateral transfemoral amputations. The first hospital I went to was in Texas where they helped me to use an above-the-knee prosthesis. Even though I worked with an amazing medical team and had intensive physical therapy for over five months, the treatment failed due to the limited soft tissue in my legs. This resulted in a very painful experience with these prosthetics. One of the doctors told me about osseointegration, a surgical procedure that aims to offer a better quality of lie and improved mobility for people who have had amputations. After hearing this, I contacted my embassy who recommended Hospital for Special Surgery without hesitation.

In December of 2020, the Saudi Arabia Embassy reached out to the International Center at HSS. This team acted quickly to secure an appointment with Dr. Rozbruch. Dr. Rozbruch recommended 1 stage, simultaneous bilateral femoral osseointegration as the traditional socket prosthetics were painful and do not fit given my limited soft tissue. In that same month, I underwent surgery and started my PT a few months later.

In March of 2020, Wai-Kwong from the physical therapy team worked with me from day one. It felt like I was a newborn learning how to walk and Wai was by my side with each step. I started by using crutches, then a cane and now walking with no assistance. Wai made sure I got enough sessions every week and was always encouraging me to do more. It took a total of 9 months of intensive therapy to reach where I am right now. I can even walk-up stairs and pass a soccer ball with ease and precision.

I have no words to express my gratitude to the entire HSS team, but one person who made my experience extraordinary was Mina Mikhail, who became more like family to me. Mina was my main point of contact prior to coming to HSS. He was available to me and made it easy for me to be able to communicate with him at any time. He was there for me at each pre-surgical appointment, on the day of surgery, checking in on me each day to assure I was ok and had everything I need. Even to this day, now that I am back in Saudi Arabia, we are still in contact and will forever have a bond.

I am thankful to my country who covered my expenses to come to the United States and the Saudi Arabia embassy who sent me to the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery. I am very grateful for meeting Dr. Rozbruch and his talented team. They explained the procedure to me and followed up with me regularly after surgery. Dr. Rozbruch and his team were available to answer any questions I had and provide guidance on making this a positive outcome. The HSS team did an amazing job, and I am very grateful. Because of Dr. Rozbruch, Wai, Mina, Glenn, and the amazing team at HSS, I can now walk on my own and I even feel my legs again!
