The arthritis in my hip came on slowly over a number of years. At first it was nothing more than unusual soreness after a run or an unexpected twinge after a sudden movement. It progressed to a constant limp, a reluctance for stair climbing, discomfort while holding my grandchildren in my arms. Stopgap measures ineffectively addressed the symptoms. Ibuprofen, CBD oil and physical therapy helped to varying degrees but the real solution would be replacement.

Knowing I wanted to have the procedure at HSS, I researched their staff and decided to see Dr. McLawhorn. We met for a number of diagnostic consultations and at the end of July 2022 I traveled to HSS' Stamford location to replace the hip.

The results were even better than I hoped. I was up and walking the afternoon of the surgery. The nursing staff were terrific. Any anxiety I had about post-operative pain was completely unfounded - I've been more uncomfortable after dental appointments. Recuperation was smooth and uneventful. I did physical therapy at home and exceeded all their achievement benchmarks. It was tempting to overdo things because I felt so good. Hearing my family say "you don't limp anymore" has been music to my ears. In a word: life-changing.

This year, my wife and I are celebrating our 50th anniversary by checking destinations off our cruise ship bucket list. This has involved a LOT of walking, most notably up the mountain to the Parthenon in Greece, up another mountain to a different acropolis and hiking up the side of an inactive 8,500 foot tall volcano in Guatemala (this only six months post-surgery). This summer we'll be in Cape Cod with our youngest grandchildren, who have already told us they're "happy we won't have to leave the beach early this year because now your hip is fixed."

Thank you, Dr. McLawhorn and HSS.
