"I had a total knee replacement in September, 2010. Prior to surgery I was in continual pain, and unable to lead an active life. I couldn't climb stairs bilaterally; couldn't walk a full city block without resting; couldn't get a good night's sleep. The surgery was successful beyond my wildest dreams. By the third day home I had discarded the walker for a cane, and within three weeks I was only using the cane to summon a cab. Integral to this success was not only the skill of the surgeon and the nursing and therapy care, but also the pain management team."

"As a 'young' candidate for a knee replacement at 40 years old in 2000, exhaustive research led me to Dr. Haas at HSS in NYC. The course of my life was forever changed by his talent as a surgeon, sharing of knowledge and most of all, compassion of a magnitude that required nothing less than me paying that same compassion forward. " I got hip surgery in the end of July so it would not interfere with school. In October I swam competitively in a swim meet, only three months after the surgery. I remember going to Dr. Kelly for an appointment and he was amazed that I was able to swim competitively so quickly. I was so eager to run again. I was able to gradually start running again that following March. By May, I completed my first triathlon."

I knew that something wasn't right. I went to see Dr. Answorth Allen, a specialist in shoulder repair. He diagnosed my shoulder with a torn rotator cuff that required surgery."

"I could not have asked for a more sensitive and patient doctor to go through my symptoms, MRI, and options. I NEVER felt the least bit rushed during the office visit, which is rare in NYC, and he made it clear the surgery was, at this point, my decision."

"This commendation goes to the team effort of three specific individuals that made it possible for me to continue to walk and live a normal unrestricted life. It started with the keen skills of Dr. Brian Halpern who instantly recognized that my sudden onset of shin splints was a serious lower back problem that had developed. I was training at 65 to take my first vacation in years to go climbing in the Alps."
