After a year of increasing pain in my right hip, despite physical therapy, I was referred to Dr. Danyal Nawabi at HSS. He confirmed that I had a significant labral tear & also diagnosed FAI (impingement).
My ultimate goal was to be able to run, again, but I was primarily concerned with being able to walk & sleep without my hip causing me discomfort. I was scheduled for arthroscopic surgery, which took place on January 14, 2016.
Post-op, my hip pain was completely gone. Aside from the moderate pain, from the surgery itself, I (literally) walked out of HSS in better shape than I went in.
After that, the hard work began. Physical therapy was a full-time job for the first two weeks, but every day revealed better range of motion and less instability. The PT staff at HSS was supportive, informative, and caring. They wanted me to heal and they motivated me to do it properly.
On July 30th, 28 weeks post-op, I successfully completed one of the most grueling road races I have ever run. The Satan's Tar was 9 miles long, 2000 feet of elevation attained, straight up & down a mountain in Ellenville, NY. My glutes activated, my hips moved without impingement, and I finished in 2 hours & 20 minutes. Considering I had only been allowed to run for 5-6 weeks, prior to the race, this was a huge accomplishment!
I can't thank Dr. Nawabi enough, for the incredible work that he did.
I owe an equal debt to my physical therapist, Terrance Sgroi.
HSS was the absolute BEST place to get back in the game.
