I had right hip resurfacing almost 8 years ago (April 2007) at age 54. Prior to surgery, I was on crutches 24/7 for 3 months. My cartilage was gone and I was in extreme pain. Post-surgery, the first two weeks were difficult, but bearable. The hospital staff had me up and walking within the first day, and I returned home to NJ after three days. A visiting nurse came to my home for checkups and with exercises, but after the third visit she said it was no longer necessary. The most important exercise was walking, which was difficult at first, but I stuck with it. By the fourth week I had a business trip to St. Louis, so I traveled with a cane and was fine. At six weeks, things took a dramatic turn for the better. I love to hike and travel and enjoy our National Parks, and since the surgery I have been able to do everything I want with a few minor adjustments. I avoid high impact activities, but can still enjoy biking and hiking. We have traveled to Alaska, Italy, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Arches National Park and the Rocky Mountains, the Cascade Mountains, the Black Hills and Badlands, Maui (for our 40th wedding anniversary), and countless road trips in between. I also enjoy visiting and vacationing with our three grown sons and two granddaughters, swimming and sightseeing. At age 62, my quality of life could not be any better, and I am not even aware that I have a resurfaced hip. I have full range of motion and no pain. Nothing. As a matter of fact, I don't feel it at all, which is as it should be. I am forever grateful to Dr. Edwin Su for performing this surgery and restoring me to a healthy life, which I have been able to enjoy to the fullest and never take for granted.
