Two and a half years ago, I was broadsided by a driver while riding my bike in Wyoming. I underwent major trauma surgery to repair my femur and a hip revision and worked hard to recover. Unfortunately, after a second surgery, I developed a chronic staph infection that significantly compromised my health. The local orthopedic surgeon advised that I would need care at a major academic medical center but offered no guidance on how to proceed.

After consulting with orthopedic specialists in Salt Lake City, who confirmed the chronic staph infection in my hip, it became clear that world‑class care was absolutely essential. I was in severe pain, losing weight due to the infection, and relying on crutches to walk.

I am deeply grateful that Mathias Bostrom, MD, at the HSS Complex Joint Reconstruction Center agreed to see me on short notice. Given how debilitated and high‑risk I was, he scheduled surgery just two weeks later. Over the next four months, the care I received from Dr. Bostrom, Dr. Henry, and the entire HSS team was nothing short of extraordinary. They were consistently supportive, attentive, and singularly focused on my recovery through two major surgeries and aggressive treatment of the infection.

My husband and I truly believe the team at HSS saved my life. I am now looking forward to beginning physical therapy in early April and continuing my recovery so that I can return to the activities I love - hiking, swimming, kayaking, biking, and cross‑country skiing.
