I have been so busy that I almost couldn't find the time to write this! Why? Because at the age of 67 my career is taking off... again! I am also busy bike riding, snowboarding, swimming, and traveling very long distances and walking through very large airports. All because of the HSS team, especially Dr. McLawhorn.
Two years ago, I could barely walk. I was in constant pain, which affected every aspect of my life. I was diagnosed with hip dysplasia, but like so many others, I believed I was too young for serious intervention and thought I could exercise my way out of the problem. I tried everything - including working with a vestibular coach - but nothing helped. It wasn’t until Dr. McLawhorn explained to me that this condition wouldn’t simply go away and that I needed both hips replaced that I finally understood the path forward.
Now, I can’t even believe I waited so long! That said, I won’t sugarcoat it - preparing for surgery really does matter. Losing weight (if needed), exercising, and continuing to stay as active as possible all contribute to a better outcome.
Today, I am completely pain-free. Thank you to Dr. McLawhorn, Alexandra Roux, and all of the nurses - whose names I wish I could remember - because every one of them was incredibly kind and supportive. HSS truly is the best.
I will never retire, and I will never stop moving!
