I suffered a serious car accident when I was 11 years old in a highway near Lima, Peru back in 1956. This left me in a coma for 3 weeks with both of my legs and spine fractured, but my vertebrae were not displaced so thankfully I had no spine complications.

I had several operations particularly on my right leg which included a bone graft to strengthen my femur. This was not only unsuccessful but led to a valgus knee. I let some time pass before coming to HSS in New York City on December of 2017. My right knee with the valgus deformity had a deviation of 30 degrees with no cartilage and it caused me pain with walking.

Julia, Gloria and Olga from the International Center helped me to set up my appointments, to deal with my insurance company and to coordinate all my care while I was at HSS. I was seen by Dr. Robert L. Buly who after getting the necessary tests decided to operate my knee and he showed to be very optimistic of obtaining very good results.

I was successfully operated by Dr. Buly with the help of Dr. Enrique A. Goytizolo from anesthesia on January 23 of 2018. Amazingly, less than 24 hours after surgery, HSS physical therapists had me up and walking with a walker. After 48 hours, one day before leaving the hospital, the therapists had me go up and down the stairs.

The days after discharge were crucial since complying with the physical therapy was required to see the full benefits of having a total knee replacement. My physical therapist was Mrs. Silvana Aguilar de Goytizolo who turned out to be very demanding. Shockingly, after just two weeks of therapy, I was already walking around the block and a month later I was walking several blocks around New York City.

Dr. Buly was very happy to see the results during my post-op visit and I was able to get discharged so I returned to Lima a few days later to continue with my recovery. After another 6 months of physical therapy, I returned to the golf course to practice my favorite sport which I had to stop for a year and a half due to my valgus knee. This is when I felt that I was born again!

Thanks to the surgery that Dr. Buly performed, the competence of Dr. Goytizolo with anesthesia, the effective coordination of everything by the International Center, and the therapy I had with Silvana, I have been able to get back on the tracks of life again.

My HSS experience has been extraordinary!

En el año 1956 cuando tenía 11 años sufrí un grave accidente automovilístico en una carretera cerca a Lima y a consecuencia quede en coma 3 semanas con fracturas en las dos piernas y en la columna dorsal sin desplazamiento que felizmente no trajo complicaciones.

Me realizaron varias operaciones, en especial a la pierna derecha donde inclusive practicaron en mí un injerto de hueso para fortalecer el fémur que no solo no funciono, sino que generó que mi rodilla se vuelva valga.

Con el pasar de los tiempos llegue en diciembre del 2017 al HSS, en la ciudad de Nueva York con mi rodilla derecha valga teniendo una desviación de 30° grados, sin cartílagos y dolor al caminar. Julia, Gloria y Olga me ayudaron con mi cita, el seguro y todo lo referente a HSS.

Me atendió el Dr. Robert L. Buly, MD quien luego de hacerme las pruebas correspondientes, decidió operar y se mostró muy optimista en que conseguiría muy buenos resultados.

El 23 de enero del 2018 el Dr. Buly con la asistencia del anestesiólogo Enrique A. Goytizolo, MD me operaron con éxito e increíblemente a menos de 24 horas de ser intervenido, los terapistas físicos del HSS me hicieron caminar con andador y a las 48 horas, un día antes de dejar el hospital, me hicieron subir y bajar escaleras.

Los siguientes días fueron cruciales ya que seguir la terapia es muy importante para que se pueda ver en su plenitud el éxito de la operación de reemplazo total de rodilla. Mi terapeuta física fue la Sra. Silvana Aguiar de Goytizolo quien resulto ser muy exigente, pero increíblemente, al cabo de dos semanas ya estaba caminando la vuelta de la manzana y al mes caminaba varias cuadras por la ciudad de Nueva York.

Cuando me toco mi chequeo con el Dr. Buly quedo muy satisfecho y me dio de alta. A los pocos días regrese a Lima para continuar mi recuperación y luego de 6 meses de terapia regresé a la cancha de golf a practicar mi deporte favorito luego de año y medio que no lo practicaba por mi rodilla valga. Allí sentí que volví a nacer y gracias a la operación que el Dr. Buly me realizo en mi rodilla y a la eficiencia del Dr. Goytizolo con la anestesia y la eficaz coordinación de todo por parte del Centro Internacional del HSS, junto con la terapia de Silvana, he podido regresar de nuevo a las pistas de la vida.

Mi experiencia en HSS ha sido extraordinaria.
