I had debilitating arthritis in my left knee. It ended my 40-year running career in my mid-50s. I was forced to take up a whole new set of sports, all non-impact. Biking and rowing (and particularly indoor rowing given my home in NYC) took, and I became avid in both.
But the pain in my knee was still acute, and it would become intolerable when I would walk more than a mile or sit for more than an hour. After one ErgRace, it was so inflamed that I couldn't walk for weeks.
David Mayman fixed all of that. His replacement of my knee in October 2017 had me back in gear with full workouts by January. In May 2018, my wife Ellen and I set out on an ambitious bike tour of Crete. The second day out, I had a blowout, was launched six feet in the air, and landed on my femur. That's when Dr. Mayman outshone even his surgery skills. With Ellen's help, he intervened and advised on my behalf from 4,000 miles away.
I owe my ability to continue to exercise vigorously to Dr. Mayman. He saved me twice. In 2021, I set the American record for 2,000 meters indoor rowing, lightweight 65+. This year, I was world champion in my division. In September, Ellen and I hiked the Dolomites, a long-time goal.
Thank you, HSS! Thank you, David Mayman!
