My journey with HSS began in January 2018 when I visited Dr. Hendricks Whitman for a rheumatology consult.

I had been diagnosed with DISH syndrome by my local rheumatologist back in 2007 - a condition with no cure and limited treatment options. We agreed it might be beneficial to seek another opinion from HSS, knowing it is a world leader in rheumatology and orthopedics.

Dr. Whitman recommended I see Dr. Han Jo Kim for orthopedic oversight. In April 2018, I had my first appointment with Dr. Kim, and I immediately knew I was in good hands. Even the x-ray technicians mentioned that Dr. Kim requested specific views beyond the standard scans - he was looking for details to ensure an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

When I met Dr. Kim, he explained everything in terms I could understand, gave me time to process, and answered all my questions. I continued seeing him as a DISH patient until February 2023, when I suffered a thoracic fracture, followed by a cervical fracture in July 2023. Both required emergency surgeries, and after discharge, I was left with cervical kyphosis and displaced hardware.

The cervical fracture caused a spinal cord injury, leaving me paralyzed in both arms for 12–18 months. My rehabilitation journey included intensive inpatient therapy, subacute rehab, home therapy, and finally outpatient therapy. Once I felt ready to discuss another spinal surgery, I returned to Dr. Kim.

After reviewing my x-rays, CT, and MRI, Dr. Kim recommended a Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomy (PSO). During surgical clearance, an abnormal EKG required cardiac evaluation. I had a congenital heart defect repaired in 2014 with valve replacement, and my cardiology team determined the valve needed repair before spinal surgery. This caused significant delays, as insurance denied authorization three times before approving a valve-in-valve repair in November 2024.

Finally, I was cleared for the PSO with Dr. Kim. Throughout this entire process, Dr. Kim and his team were incredible - supportive, patient, and reassuring. Today, my posture has improved significantly, and I can hold my head high, smile, and be thankful for the outstanding care I received.

I’m grateful to have had the best orthopedic surgeon and team at HSS to restore my quality of life. Thank you, Dr. Kim and everyone at HSS!
