In writing this, I hope to reach out to others who may be in my same position. I was not your typical hip replacement candidate. After an injury that was misdiagnosed for years by a different practice, I found myself in Dr. McLawhorn's office. Only 1 year after hip reconstruction surgery somewhere else, I limped into Dr. McLawhorns office at the ripe age of 43 using a cane and taking a taxi to HSS because I was unable to walk a few blocks to the hospital. At 43, I was depressed at the simple idea of using a cane to walk. The fact that I have a 12, 8, and 5 year old to try to chase after made it all worse. At the recommendation of a friend who also had a hip issue at a young age, I made a quick appointment. Dr. McLawhorn sat there and listened to a desperate woman who was in pain and miserable. I went to that appointment not knowing what the future held, yet he explained options and didn't force his opinion. His office would have accommodated within a week, but I chose 2 weeks due to personal reasons. It was the best decision I made. Besides him, his staff and the staff at HSS Orthopedics with Stamford Health were exceptional. Everything was preplanned and organized for me. At my 5 week post-op appointment, I walked in not looking like a hip replacement patient. I am writing this only 6 weeks post-op. My range of motion is better than it was 4 years ago. I can walk my dog, and take my kids for a bike ride. I uploaded a picture of my family going to surf without their lead surfer from the year before. However, I will be in the picture this year because of Dr. McLawhorn! Thank you for truly giving me my life back!
