I first came to HSS in the summer of 2019 after experiencing increasingly severe hip and knee pain even after some physical therapy. Dr. Nawabi diagnosed the problem as extensive hip deterioration and recommended surgery. He explained the procedure in detail and answered all my questions completely and with respect. I told him I was on board and available as soon as possible for the surgery. I was operated on several weeks later. In the late afternoon of the day of surgery a physical therapist showed up and asked me if I wanted to try walking. I was off on my crutches walking with him in the hall and climbing a few steps. It was great to walk that soon with no pain. Getting up and moving right away started me on a positive recovery. The ice machine offered was pretty nice, too.

With a month or so of the hip replacement I started physical therapy twice a week at HSS Midtown with Amanda Scheer. Amanda was wonderful laying out goals and steps for achieving them. We worked together for a few months as I moved from crutches and to a cane, improving every week. Toward the end of my PT schedule, Amanda introduced me to Kelyssa Hall, who provided ongoing performance training. I was so pleased with the progress that I had made already that I started seeing Kelyssa twice a week at HSS Midtown in late 2019.

Over time Kelyssa took our activities to a whole different level focusing on core strength, balance, physical skills, etc. We continued our sessions via Zoom during Covid and still have them today. Kelyssa has been terrific at keeping me engaged and committed to overall optimal performance. She is kind and demanding in a good way. She also have advised me on exercises to do at home. I always leave a session with Kelyssa feeling better and knowing that the time spent was worthwhile.

In September 2022 I was back at HSS meeting with Dr. Johnson about my curling and spreading toes on the other (non-hip-related) foot. I thought the issue was bunions. Dr. Johnson found several broken bones in my toes about which I was unaware. She confirmed the need for the toes' repair and a bunionectomy. So I went back to HSS for day surgery. The procedure and recovery turned out to be more complicated than expected. Dr. Johnson and her team provided excellent medical advice and support for the six months of recovery. Amanda Scheer gave me several sessions of PT. Kelyssa Hall and I kept our weekly performance routine accommodating the repaired toes. All these activities kept me on track and realizing the objectives toward my goals.

I have experienced continued success with HSS for which I am very appreciative. I have encouraged family, friends and colleagues to receive the best care possible as I did at HSS.
