From Struggle to Strength: My Journey with Sciatica and HSS

In 2018, a car accident turned my life upside down. What started as minor discomfort in my lower back quickly spiraled into debilitating pain down my leg — a constant, burning ache that made walking feel like an uphill battle. My love for rock climbing, a passion that had once made me feel invincible, became a distant memory. Even the simplest tasks, like carrying a bag of groceries, were impossible. Every step was a reminder of how far I had fallen from the active life I once knew.

The diagnosis was clear: sciatica, exacerbated by a herniated disc. Determined to find relief, I embarked on a journey through physical therapy and endured several epidural steroid injections. Despite my best efforts and the support of skilled therapists, the pain persisted. I started to lose hope, wondering if I’d ever get my life back. My loved ones encouraged me to avoid surgery, fearing the risks, and I often questioned if I could endure the pain much longer.

Enter Dr. Lovecchio. When I first met him, I was discouraged and emotionally drained. He listened to me with genuine empathy and took the time to understand my journey. He explained that while we had tried the conservative options, surgery was the next step. He reassured me with his expertise and confidence, but what stood out the most was his compassion. For the first time in years, I felt a glimmer of hope.

The day of my surgery was a mix of nervous anticipation and cautious optimism. When I woke up the next morning, it was as if I’d been given a new lease on life. For the first time in years, I could walk without pain. I even carried a bag of groceries that same day, something I hadn’t been able to do in years. The sense of freedom and relief was indescribable.

My care at HSS wasn’t just exceptional — it was transformative. I felt seen, heard, and supported at every turn. Their commitment to patient care went beyond clinical expertise; it was deeply human. It inspired me so much that I knew I wanted to be a part of this incredible institution.

I applied for a position at HSS, eager to bring the same level of dedication to others that I had experienced. Now, as a program coordinator, I work every day to support the team that gave me my life back. Each time I see a patient walk through our doors, I remember my own journey and feel honored to play a small role in their recovery.

My story isn’t just about overcoming pain; it’s about finding purpose through adversity. HSS didn’t just heal my body — they ignited a passion within me to help others find their way back to the things they love, just as I did with rock climbing.
