Dr. Metzl didn't just get me back on my bike; he saved my legs and possibly my life. In early May, I began experiencing weakness, numbness, and pain in my lower legs. Another physician diagnosed the condition (over Zoom) as a bruised disc, instructed me to stop using my indoor bike trainer, and prescribed steroids. My cycling coach urged me to get a second opinion from Dr. Metzl, who had treated her with success years ago. His office heard me out, and scheduled an almost immediate Zoom consult. After just a few minutes of listening and observing, Dr. Metzl directed me to the nearest ER to get checked for a leg clot. (I happened to be at a rental near Carmel, NY, and Dr. Metzl found the nearest ER for me.) Turned out I had extensive clotting in the arteries of both legs - suspected to have been caused by an unconfirmed bout of COVID-19 I'd suffered upon return from a bike trip to Spain.

With Dr. Metzl's help, and the help of HSS physiologist Polly de Mille, I was back on the bike within a week of my release from the hospital. Now, roughly two months out of hospital, I'm back to full form and setting power highs. I am forever indebted to this group and to HSS.
