Choosing to have back surgery was not an easy decision. I had been experiencing lower back pain for almost four years. I had difficulties both standing and walking. I saw a chiropractor, an acupuncturist, a physical therapist and a MD for steroid shots. I also took various over-the-counter pain medications which increased my blood pressure. Unfortunately, my pain got progressively worse, impacting my mobility and my quality of life. I finally knew it was time to consider surgery. I chose to go to HSS because of its outstanding national reputation in orthopedics and set up an appointment with Dr. Sheha. I was apprehensive at first, but that quickly changed after meeting with Dr. Sheha and his staff. Dr. Sheha is a very skilled and personable surgeon, but also supportive, listening to my concerns and answering all of my questions. I had a spine laminectomy at HSS Orthopedics with Stamford Health on Friday, December 3. Dr. Sheha and his staff were professional and compassionate. I knew I was in good hands. My back felt better immediately after surgery. I could walk without pain and even climb stairs. Within a short period of time, I was again enjoying my time with family and friends, teaching in the classroom, and playing the racquet sports I love to play. Choosing to have back surgery at HSS was one of the best decisions I ever made. Kudos to Dr. Sheha and his staff!
