I was diagnosed with bilateral avascular necrosis of the hips back in 1990. Core decompression and bone graft surgery stabilized that condition until the spring of 2017. Beginning in March, my left hip rapidly degenerated to the point that I couldn’t walk without significant pain. By the end of June I knew it was time for a new hip.

A bit of online research convinced me HSS was the best place to get the job done. One phone call to the HSS Physician Referral Service got me in touch with my physicians' office. I set up an appointment for three days later, during which time my surgeon agreed that I needed a total hip replacement. My only remaining question was ‘would I be able to go scuba diving during my scheduled vacation in Bonaire early January 2018?’ He answered confidently YES, and my surgery was scheduled for August 14. My surgery and my entire experience with HSS was incredibly positive. My surgeon addressed all my concerns and gave me the confidence to proceed. His great sense of humor, warmth, and positive outlook made me feel like we were old friends. The entire HSS staff were all highly skilled professionals with great smiles and positive attitudes.

With the post-surgery guidance of my hometown physical therapy team I was able to resume normal activities pain free, including returning to work full-time, within about six weeks. My personal goal, achieved, was to wear my HSS shirt autographed by my surgeon and my anesthesiologist Dr. Kumar while scuba diving in Bonaire. Been there, done that, got the pictures to prove it.

I’m still amazed how quickly I could get an appointment and schedule my surgery. My most sincere thanks to my surgeon, Dr. Kanupriya Kumar, PA-C Austin Cavelli, office manager Selena Cortez and the countless HSS staff that allowed me to “Get Back in the Swim” once again!
