I have had three spine surgeries at HSS. Each surgery was performed by a different surgeon. Dr. Owusu-Sarpong performed my third/latest surgery, and I am so grateful to have had him perform the work. In addition to being an excellent surgeon, Dr. Owusu-Sarpong is a caring and compassionate human being. He listened carefully, and provided detailed (understandable) explanations, to every question I (and my wife) asked him. When I speak with him, I know I have his undivided attention.
My third surgery was more complicated than the first two, requiring a slower approach than anticipated; doubling the expected time in surgery, from 4 hours to approximately 8 hours. His surgical skill, perseverance, and (very importantly) endurance, has given me the ability to walk again. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, confident I will be again able to do the things I love (sailing/bicycling/longer hikes).
I’m humbled to be given my mobility back, and profoundly grateful for having Dr. Owusu-Sarpong as my surgeon. HSS is fortunate to have him on their team.
I have had other orthopedic surgeries as well: hips replaced, knees replaced, and shoulder reconstruction. So, I have some hospitalization experience! The HSS Radiology Department works hand-in-hand with their surgeons with a full array of machines to meet their needs. Surgery can make a person feel a little cranky, to say the least. The HSS nursing staff and their assistants are outstanding, dedicated, and caring. They come when you press the “call” button! I have nothing to say but good things about HSS, as well.
I hope I never need to have spine surgery again, but if I do, I know where to go.
