I was diagnosed by Dr. Paul Lombardi (an excellent doctor!) at Tri-County Orthopedics in Morristown, NJ with a tear in the gluteus medialis muscle (part of your butt's muscle group). This had been plaguing me for about 18 months despite stepwise treatment, e.g., physical therapy and cortisone injections. My triathlon training, especially running, was becoming increasingly more difficult, painful, and resulted in far less distances. Dr. Lombardi recommended I see Dr. Bryan Kelly at HSS given that a surgical answer was beyond Lombardi's expertise and that Dr. Kelly was the only surgeon in the region who could attempt such a repair. More importantly, Dr. Lombardi advised that a less used treatment, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) might be the treatment of choice instead of surgery deep into the hip and butt region. That would have required 9 months recovery and a whole hip and leg cast! Dr. Lombardi recommended Dr. Kelly for a second opinion. Dr. Kelly agreed with the diagnosis, PRP treatment, and prognosis. In fact, Kelly predicted I had a 75% probability of full recovery after 8-10 weeks physical therapy. I proceeded with the treatment (twice) with 6 weeks between. I returned to running and triathlons that summer and placed 1st and 2nd in my age group! I highly recommend Dr. Bryan Kelly for his diagnostic ability, professional demeanor, and great chair-side manner!
