On a gorilla trek in Rwanda in October 2022, I unfortunately fell through a wooden bridge severely breaking my left ankle. I was airlifted to King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, where I was told that I never would walk normally again. I was then flown to NYC for surgery at HSS at NYP. Steve B. Behrens, MD, skillfully realigned, rebuilt and implanted multiple pieces of hardware into my left ankle. There is no way to minimize the severity of the break.
The surgery by Dr. Behrens at HSS at NYP, along with treatment and follow up by Dr. Behrens, Meagan Murtagh (PA), Valerie and staff was beyond amazing. Since the surgery I have climbed up to Tigers Nest in Bhutan, gone on multiple African safaris, trekked through Asia, Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand and North America. I walk (normally) 5+ miles and play pickleball most mornings when I’m home.
I can’t help feeling grateful and blessed for the surgery and treatment that I had received from Dr. Behrens, Meagan Murtagh and the staff at HSS. A truly amazing place, made so by the best of the best in orthopedics.
