My Hip Labrum Journey: From Injury to Recovery

Five years ago, I tore my hip labrum during a yoga class. It was painful, but with time and dedicated physical therapy, I was able to fully recover without surgery. Life went back to normal - until I reinjured it years later during a weight training class. This time, the pain was sharper and more persistent. I hoped it would heal like before, but it didn’t.

I waited about six months from the time of the injury to my surgery date, trying to stay active and positive. By the time the day arrived, I couldn’t walk more than a few minutes without feeling sharp, stabbing pain in my hip. I was ready—nervous, but also excited—for surgery and the chance to feel like myself again.

The hip arthroscopy went smoothly. To my surprise, recovery wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. Within three days, I no longer needed pain medication. By the end of the month, I was walking without any support. I committed fully to my rehab program, attending physical therapy twice a week for four months to rebuild strength and stability.

In the spring, I decided to challenge myself and signed up for the Cow Harbor Run. I wasn’t sure if I’d be ready to run by September, but I wanted a goal to keep me motivated. Not only did I complete the race - I finished just two minutes shy of my 2021 time. Running now feels easier and more natural than ever before.

I’m so grateful to Dr. Nwachukwu and his incredible team for helping me get here. My advice to anyone facing a similar journey: find a great doctor, trust the process, work hard, stay consistent, and know that a pain-free, active lifestyle is possible. It’s absolutely worth it!
