When I was twelve years old, I began getting severe back pain and so, my parents decided to take me to a doctor, where I was then diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. I was then referred to Dr. Widmann's office at HSS and began bracing. Besides bracing, I tried acupuncture, physical therapy, massage therapy, and over-the-counter pain medications, but none of which were controlling my pain. After four years of watching my curve progress from the mid 30s to about 48- 50 degrees, I decided that surgery was the right decision. While surgery was definitely the scariest thing I have ever been through, it was also the best decision I have ever made! I am so happy I went through with spinal fusion surgery, as I now live a more pain-free lifestyle and I don't need to worry about my curve progressing; I also have no restrictions on what I can or can't do, allowing me to go on crazy adventures with my friends and family, as well as play on my school volleyball team. Throughout my scoliosis journey, Dr. Widmann was with me every step of the way and I am so grateful for all he has done for me. The staff at HSS was also exceptionally kind, especially the nurses who took amazing care of me; it really made my stay at HSS feel much more relaxed and at ease. Thank you to Dr. Widmann, all of the nurses, my anesthesiologist, pediatrician, physical therapist, and everyone else for all that you've done! I really appreciate it!
