At UFC Vegas 39, I threw a front kick and dislocated my big toe. My toe snapped out of place, but somehow I managed to improvise and fight through the injury to win the fight. After the fight Dr. Robert Marx, UFC Orthopedic Consultant and sports medicine surgeon at HSS, referred me to his colleague, Dr. Mark Drakos, a foot and ankle surgeon at HSS.
I visited Dr. Drakos in New York, who let me know that I had separated my joint and torn all the ligaments around my big toe. He recommended that we should move forward with surgery to repair the issue. While I was nervous about the future of my career, I knew I was in good hands with Dr. Drakos and his team.
Thanks to the doctors and nurses at HSS, my surgery was successful. Just seven months later, I was able to fight and win at UFC 274. I credit the team of doctors at HSS for giving me the confidence to return to the Octagon. I can’t thank Dr. Drakos and Dr. Marx enough for fixing my toe and getting me back into the Octagon.
