Had herniated discs L4-L5 and L5-S1 with L5 vertebrae also pressing on the nerve bundle. On April 30, 2015, Dr. Alexander Hughes and his team performed the spinal fusion of L4, L5 & S1 vertebrae. Dr. Hughes always treated me with respect, gave me comprehensive and honest answers to my questions and allowed me the courtesy to re-question issues that weren't 100% clear to me.
My recovery was and still continues to be slow, however, there is continued progress. Although I had been a good skier for well over forty years, I got back on skis January 8, 2016. I felt tentative, awkward, unsteady and had no stamina. On February 5, 2016, I attend a day trip to Hunter Mountain, a trip that I've organized and ran for 29 years. As part of our annual trip, we sponsor a competition on the Hunter Mountain Race Course. Without the skill level of years past, I actually became intimidated by the race course and considered not participating. Since my ego would have no part of that, I raced and set a goal of completing the course in a upright position. I was indeed successful! I felt like a million bucks.
About a month later, my skiing skills started to improve. I feel that some time next winter, I'll be back. Hopefully before our 30th Annual ski trip.
I am very grateful for Dr. Hughes and the entire HSS team for getting me Back in the Game!
