The entire experience from first visit through surgery to 3-month check-up has functioned like a well-oiled machine. In the hospital, pre-surgery, during surgery and post-surgery, everyone knew exactly what they had to do and when to do it. I don't have a lot of hospital experience but the entire team from doctors to nurses to techs exuded 100% confidence - instilling the same in me. Once home and in less than a week, I was off the walker and on a cane. By the end of the second week, I was off the cane. From that point, I only got stronger and steadier.
Within two months I was back doing what I love to do most and that is trail-hiking and canoeing. I took it easy until after my 3 month check-up with Dr. McLawhorn and was given a clean bill-of-health. Four months after the total hip replacement, without any aids, I hiked to the Hudson River Scenic Overlook on the Ramapo-Dunderburg Trail in Bear Mountain State Park. From the parking lot to the overlook is 0.8 miles and an elevation differential of 475 feet. The entire round trip (up and down) took 1 hour and 10 minutes and my average speed was 1.93 mph.
This surgery has given me back my full quality of life. Neil Miller, Age 69.
