I'm Michael O'Brien and just completed riding my bike across the country with a newly minted total knee replacement by Dr. Bostrom. I've been a patient at HSS since 2002. First with Dr. Wickiewicz and in July 2021, Dr. Bostrom. 21 years ago, I was hit head-on by a speeding SUV during a bike training ride out in New Mexico. My trauma team was surprised I survived and didn't think I would ride again. I call this day, My Last Bad Day.

Thanks to outstanding care at HSS, I got moving again. Not only did I get back on my bike, but now I can say that I've cycled 3,600 miles in 41 days from Astoria, OR to Washington, D.C. It underscores the importance of getting the right care team. I'm forever grateful for the care I've received from HSS, and with every ride, we prove that together we go far.

I believe cycling is life because it throws everything at you, and on my trip, I experienced it all - wind, rain, hail, tailwinds, headwinds, long climbs, and fast descents. It was amazing. Our country isn't perfect, but it's beautiful, and there are so many folks rippling goodness to help create a better tomorrow. During the ride, I profiled 45 non-profits, including HSS, that are doing the hard work that has no end.

I hope my journey helps others realize that we can prevent bad moments from turning into a bad day or longer. We can do hard things through mindfulness, gratitude, and riding with those who bring out the best in us.

Will it be easy? No.

But the meaningful things in life are never easy.

You've got this!
