In a word, the doctors at HSS are amazing.
I postponed seriously-needed total knee replacement surgery (both knees) because my daughter was ill (breast cancer). After her death, I stayed with her husband and children for 18 months, as she had requested. By then my knee pain was severe and I needed to devote the time and emotion that the surgery required.
Dr. McLawhorn replaced my left knee (the worst one) and then a year later replaced my right knee. After about four months following both knee surgeries, I returned to pain-free walking, which is essential for living in NYC!
Dr. McLawhorn warned me to avoid falling. Abandoning all intelligent thinking, almost five years after the left knee replacement I went out onto the deck at our home in the Catskills Mountains after a beautiful snowfall to take some pictures - in my house slippers. I slipped and shattered my left femur. I insisted on returning by ambulance to NYC and HSS.
Dr. Dvorzhinskiy patched my leg back together. This surgery was complicated and my recovery took much longer. The scars on my left leg are more impressive now!
I don’t think that my positive outcomes after all three of these surgeries has anything to do with Drs. McLawhorn and Dvorzhinsky having essentially the same first names. I think that their common traits are that they both are extremely competent and kind. I’m grateful to them (and to HSS for employing them).
