A lifetime of running and other impact sports, along with some injuries earlier in life and probably some sketchy genetics, had set me up for severe hip impingement by the late 2000s. I came to HSS seeking an alternative to the seemingly - at least to me - extreme measure of having a full hip replacement. I was amazingly fortunate to find Dr. Edwin Su. I had previously sought input from doctors across the country and, to a person, they had insisted on full hip replacement. Admittedly, I had ground my femoral head to a relative pulp and no one, save Dr. Su at HSS, was willing to take a resurfacing on. The resurfacing went so well that I was able to continue all activities, including running marathons which probably wasn't the brightest idea, but hey it was fun. Later, Dr. Su would similarly fix the other hip which suffered from overuse on account of the first deterioration. One activity that never stopped, despite the two hip interventions, was maintaining my place in a local once-a-month-skiing group. In fact, we just hit our 300th straight month. Relatedly, I even was able, gently, to ski at 6 or so weeks out of surgery which kept the streak alive back in 2008. While skiing after surgery is definitely not recommended, in fact it's really a dim idea, it simply demonstrates the effectiveness and incredible skill of Dr. Su. Both HSS and I am lucky to have him.
