At the end of August I was enjoying a long weekend in Nantucket when my friends and I decided it would be fun to rent motor scooters to explore the island. It was fun until the very end of the day when my scooter skidded and I landed on my right foot (as well as my knee, hip, elbow and head). I knew immediately that I had done a lot of damage to my foot. After being rushed to the local hospital and a full workup I was told that I would need surgery to repair the broken bones in my foot.
As an occupational therapist living in NYC I knew immediately that I should go to Hospital for Special Surgery for a consult. I consulted with a family friend, an attending at HSS who recommended Dr. Scott Ellis. Before leaving Nantucket I made an appointment and was seen the next day by Dr. Ellis and his PA Stephen Castigliola. As a team they reviewed my xrays and shared with me what the surgical process and recovery would look like. I knew I was in good hands, and I appreciated the time that was spent with me, and the friendly manner in which interaction was carried out by Dr. Ellis and Stephen. I felt fully confident in their hands. Surgery was scheduled the next day. Again I was impressed with the professionalism and efficiency of the entire operation - from pre-op to admission to the day surgery unit.
I met my team of doctors and seemingly within minutes of closing my eyes I was back in recovery. The next six weeks were a little difficult. Leg elevation for two weeks, non weight bearing for six weeks. Luckily I had very little pain. Stephen was always available when I had questions or concerns, which he handled with respect and always in a timely manner. Having the pins removed was my first milestone and progression to weight bearing was my second. That brings me to today - 3 months post accident, I am up and about - no pain, no limp and back performing my regular workouts and activities. I recently showed another one of my doctors my xrays from the time of the accident as well as my post surgical xrays. He looked me in the eye and said, do you realize how badly your foot was damaged? And do you realize what an incredible job your surgeon did. I shook my head yes, and he said it again - "no I mean it, whoever that surgeon was, he did an incredible job." I am forever grateful to my team at HSS. From beginning to end I was impressed with the efficiency (very little waiting time for appointments - which is important to me) of the operation, the professionalism of the entire staff, but most importantly the skill of the surgical team, Dr. Ellis and Stephen Castigliola.
