In my late 50s, I began experiencing hip pain. Because I was relatively young and very fit, none of the doctors I initially saw thought I would need a hip replacement. I tried physical therapy, stretching, and anti-inflammatory medications, but my condition worsened to the point that I was walking with a severe limp and constant pain.
I eventually went to HSS, where I learned that my right hip needed to be replaced (Dr. Su; Main Campus in NYC). I was very nervous about the surgery - especially the anesthesia - but everything went smoothly, and I was walking pain-free the afternoon of the operation.
Six years later, the same symptoms developed in my left hip. This time, I knew what was coming. By then, HSS had opened in Stamford, CT, near my home, and I chose Dr. McLawhorn (based on his excellent reputation). If anything, the second surgery was even easier - I was up and moving pain-free the same day again.
Staying physically active is a huge part of my life. I love tennis, golf, skiing, biking, and hiking, and losing that would have meant losing a major part of my social life and joy. I’ve referred many people to Drs. Su and McLawhorn, and everyone has been extremely pleased. The surgeons at HSS gave me my life back - twice - and I am deeply grateful. The nursing staff is also excellent.
