I started feeling pain in my shoulder 20 years ago. Gradually over the years it grew worse and worse until I barely had use of my right arm. When my left shoulder began to hurt, I knew it was time to act. I did not want to be unable to use either of my arms. I couldn't comb my hair, get dressed, and it was even difficult holding a cup of coffee in my right hand. Most importantly I could not hold my great-grandchildren.
My granddaughter Erica, an HSS employee, made sure I had a visit set up with Dr. Sam Taylor to discuss having a shoulder replacement. Dr. Taylor immediately made me feel comfortable, and even at the age of 94, I had full confidence in having a total shoulder replacement with him. I went in to the surgery, expecting the recovery to take months, but I was amazed at how well I did after surgery. I had NO pain after the procedure, and was diligent with the therapy exercises prescribed to me by Julia Doty, my occupational therapist.
Before I knew it, I was able to use my shoulder again, without pain, and with great motion. I hadn't done this in 20 years! Additionally, all the therapy exercises helped to reduce my left shoulder pain. Best of all I can hold my great-grandchildren again. I can even reach down into the crib to pick them up, which is a far cry from barely being able to pick up a cup of coffee. This surgery has greatly improved my quality of life, and I can truly say I am "Back in the Game!"
