I am a 55 year woman who suffered for 4 years with severe arthritis in both my knees. I could no longer walk for more than a block and was in constant pain whenever I walked. I tried physical therapy, injections, pain meds, but nothing alleviated the pain. After talking with a childhood friend, who was a PA at HSS and is now an administrator at HSS, she recommended Dr. Haas for a consultation. My husband and I were very impressed with the organization and cleanliness of the hospital, but most importantly, with the professionalism and bedside manner of Dr. Haas. He made me feel comfortable and explained everything I was to experience following the surgery as well as the recovery process. His method of a minimal incision using small instruments along with the zipline closure, was one of the main reasons my recovery is going so well. I had bilateral TKR February 11 and it is now 8 weeks later and I am walking pain free, with some mild stiffness. I was in the hospital for 5 days and then went to inpatient acute rehab for 10 days. A must! 3 hours a day, five days a week bending and stretching my knees. Followed by outpatient PT for the next 10 weeks. While at HSS, Dr. Haas came by every day to check on me. The care was outstanding, and if you're lucky enough to get a window view, it is beautiful to see the city, especially at night! The first 3 weeks is extremely difficult because of the pain, the pain med side effects, and the overall adjustment to your body after having major surgery. At week 4 I began to feel less pain and stopped taking any pain meds other than Tylenol. By week 6 I felt significantly better and right now at week 8 I feel great. You must exercise your leg EVERY DAY no matter how painful. It will pay off. Stay strong those first few weeks and you will be thrilled with the results. I highly recommend HSS and Dr. Haas. My incisions are very small and barely visible even at this early stage. At PT the therapists are all impressed with the incisions and the zipline was a fascination to everyone. Dr. Haas gave me my life back to enjoy pain free. I am so happy I reached out to my childhood friend who made a life changing recommendation to me to see Dr. Haas. HSS is the only place to go for joint replacement and Dr. Haas should be your number one choice. My recovery is really remarkable, not just to me, but to all the physical therapists and doctors I've seen. It wasn't an easy or quick decision to have the surgery, but one that I am completely thrilled that I had.
