After 31 years in law enforcement, I retired and began a new career in school security. During my police career I sustained several injuries to my ankle, which began to worsen as the years passed. Ultimately in 2019, I had a full ankle collapse, which was so severe that I was actually walking on top of the side of my foot.
I had gone to Philadelphia for consultations and received bad news as it was to be numerous surgeries, a year recovery, and being in a cast during that year. I elected not to have the surgery and was fitted with an Arizona ankle brace, which caused many different issues and constant pain and discomfort.
Finally, in January 2022 with the pain and discomfort unbearable, I began my research into HSS. My first visit was with Dr. Scott Ellis who couldn’t even believe I was walking on my ankle. He was straightforward and honest telling it was very complicated and he would need assistance from a fellow colleague Dr. Austin Fragomen who specializes in cases such as mine.
Upon consulting with Dr. Fragomen, he immediately reassured me that this condition could be corrected with an ankle fusion and complete healing within 6 months. As you hear the words ankle fusion you think the worst - permanent limp, limited mobility, and a failed fusion runs through your mind.
Both Dr. Ellis and Dr. Fragomen were honest, stand-up guys who I will recommend to anyone who will listen. They never rushed during appointments, always answered questions honestly, and up to you going into the surgery, asked you what you wanted with the options that were available.
Having no other choice, fusion surgery was completed in June 2022. After a four-hour surgery done by Dr. Fragomen and Dr. Ellis, it was a complete success.
After a second surgery by Dr. Ellis to correct a toe issue, I was back at work by December 1, 2022. I have no limp, I regained my height again, I don't use brace, and I am able to walk 12,000 steps or more a day pain-free.
THANK YOU Dr. Fragomen, Dr. Ellis, and all the staff at HSS for getting me Back in the Game. I am now able to go to the beach, see my beloved Celtics, and walk my pup where a year again it was impossible to do.
When you hear the words ankle fusion, it’s not the end but a new beginning in your life's journey.
