I met with Dr. McLawhorn about 4 years ago for an initial consult about arthritis in my right hip. He confirmed the diagnosis and explained the options available to me since I wasn’t experiencing that much pain, only flexibility/mobility issues. He advised PT and said to stay in touch with his office until such time when I thought the pain had begun to increase or become unmanageable — that day arrived in November 2022. I contacted his office and scheduled a follow up consultation and we agreed I was a prime candidate for anterior hip replacement surgery. Dr. McLawhorn explained the entire process and set expectations for my recovery. Post-visit, his top notch team springs into action and got me scheduled for all of the required pre-op visits and tests. The rest of the HSS team also springs into action, communicates and schedule everything on the portal and it is straight through processing from there.

Any questions I had throughout the process were sent via email or as messages on the app and were answered promptly and completely.

On the day of my surgery, my intake and pre-op processes were prompt and professional. Everyone made sure I was comfortable and explained everything along the way. Dr. McLawhorn, his PA, the nurses, and Dr. Tanaka (anesthesiologist) conducted all of their pre-op checks and explained everything that was going to occur during my surgery and post-op.

I remember being covered in a warm blanket for the trip through the “ice box” and into the operating room, sliding onto the operating table, being introduced to the team and then it was lights out! A few hours later I woke up in the recovery room without any issues. Dr. McLawhorn told me everything went extremely well and that he had spoken with my wife and advised her of the same. I was hoping/expecting to go home the same day but it was determined that I should spend the night since it was getting late (after 8:00), which was another great call by my care team!

The post-op nurse in the recovery room constantly looked over me and made sure I was comfortable. We discussed pain management and he gave me some food and water. I was then transported to a room on the 7th floor where another great group of nurses and aides got me set up for a restful and comfortable night. I was scheduled to be discharged the next day and the new team of nurses, aides, PAs, PTs and doctors performed all of their checks and evaluations to send me home. Everything was efficient and I was thoroughly prepared to go home and begin my recovery. All of the meds I was prescribed to take were explained, included on my discharge paperwork, and listed on the HSS portal. My PT sessions were also listed on the portal as tele-visits.

Dr. McLawhorn called me later that day to check on me, provide some instructions, manage my expectations, and answer any questions I had. I can unequivocally say you are in great hands with Dr. McLawhorn, his practice team, and the entire staff at HSS from your initial visit to the moment they put you in the car to go home and throughout my recovery period!

Thank you all for your care, dedication, and professionalism.
