I have always been an avid runner and was a Division I collegiate distance runner. Last spring, while training for a half marathon, I experienced sudden and severe back pain during a three-mile run - so intense that I could not walk or bear weight on my right side.
Having previously received care for sports-related injuries at HSS, I knew that was where I wanted to be evaluated. Imaging, including x-rays and an MRI of my lower spine and sacrum, revealed severe bilateral sacral fractures extending through S1–S2, with the right being worse than the left. I was in significant pain and unable to work as a registered nurse, a role that is physically demanding.
After doing my own research and upon the recommendation of one of my physicians, I reached out to Dr. Yoon to discuss possible treatment options. During my consultation, Dr. Yoon carefully explained what a sacroplasty entails and why it might be beneficial in my case. Dr. Yoon was transparent in explaining that this procedure is typically performed on much older patients with sacral insufficiency fractures, as I was only 26 at the time. However, given the severity of my pain and the extent of my functional limitations, he felt it was a reasonable and appropriate treatment option.
What stood out most to me was not only Dr. Yoon’s expertise in this highly specialized procedure, but also his emphasis on identifying the underlying cause of my fractures. He ensured a comprehensive approach to my care by connecting me with a metabolic bone specialist to further evaluate contributing factors.
A few weeks later, I underwent the sacroplasty. I vividly remember waking up with little to no pain and being able to walk out of the surgical center the same day. Following the procedure, I worked closely with a physical therapist at HSS and gradually rebuilt my strength over the course of six months.
Returning to running was always my ultimate goal, though I understood it might look different than it had in the past. As time went on and my confidence grew, I slowly and intentionally increased my mileage. Nearly a year after surgery, I allowed myself to consider the possibility of running the New York City Marathon—a lifelong dream.
In June (2025), I had the opportunity to join a fundraising team and began a four-month training cycle. I approached training with caution, remained diligent with my physical therapy exercises, and prioritized injury prevention. While I was initially apprehensive about the physical demands of marathon training, I had confidence in the procedure, the rehabilitation process, and the work I had put in.
I trained completely pain-free and went on to complete the TCS New York City Marathon in 4 hours and 8 minutes. It was truly one of the most magical days of my life. Throughout the experience, I could not help but reflect on the fact that this achievement would not have been possible without the exceptional care I received from Dr. Yoon.
I am forever grateful for his kindness, clinical expertise, and comprehensive approach to my care. He gave me the opportunity to accomplish something I once thought was impossible. The NYC Marathon was an unforgettable experience - and I am already signed up for 2026.
