I would like to share my experience with Dr. Constantine Demetracopoulos at the Hospital for Special Surgery and the extraordinary care I received under his treatment.
In May 2022, while visiting my daughter in Florence, Italy, I was involved in a serious Vespa accident that resulted in broken ribs, severe contusions, and a complex fracture of my ankle and leg. While still in Tuscany, I underwent two initial surgeries. The first involved the placement of an external fixation device to stabilize my ankle and leg while the swelling subsided. Once my condition stabilized, a second surgery was performed to repair the fractured bones.
After four weeks in Italy, I returned to New Jersey and came under the care of a local physician. During this time, I was treated for a wound infection that had developed, and in September 2022, I required an additional surgery because the bones had still not fully healed.
Despite many months of recovery and physical therapy, my foot remained misaligned, the bones had not properly healed, and I was unable to walk without crutches. Recognizing the complexity of my condition, my physician ordered an MRI and referred me to Dr. Demetracopoulos, as my case required a higher level of specialization.
Dr. Demetracopoulos was able to see me despite the challenges of scheduling so soon after a prior surgery. Between April 2023 and October 2023, he performed two reconstructive surgeries, including the placement of an artificial ankle, and carefully guided me through every stage of recovery and rehabilitation.
From my very first visit, it was clear that I was in the hands of an exceptional surgeon and physician. Dr. Demetracopoulos’s expertise, calm confidence, and thoughtful guidance made an enormous difference throughout what had been a long and difficult journey. Equally remarkable was the level of care provided by the entire Hospital for Special Surgery team. Whether during office visits or hospital stays, the professionalism, coordination, and genuine compassion I experienced were truly extraordinary—far beyond anything I had encountered elsewhere.
The outcome has been life‑changing. Today, I am able to walk, exercise, practice Pilates, and return to the active lifestyle I love, with the only remaining limitation being racket sports. Dr. Demetracopoulos quite literally gave me my mobility - and my independence - back.
I will always be deeply grateful to Dr. Demetracopoulos and the entire HSS team for the exceptional care that made this recovery possible.
