I first went to Hospital for Special Surgery in 1989 after I was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis by a New Jersey MD after months of pain in my right hip. I had been born with congenital hip dysplasia, but had not experienced any problems until age 28. I went to Hospital for Special Surgery for a second opinion. I liked Dr. Salvati's direct yet gentle bedside manner. I was also impressed that this prominent surgeon in a world renowned hospital was NOT in a rush to operate. He told me to wait as long as I could and to not rush into surgery due to my age. When I was diagnosed with arthritis in my left hip, the pain became unbearable. I had two children and had to leave my career as a registered nurse due to the unrelenting bilateral hip pain. I finally decided that it was time for surgery in 2002, a full 13 years after I had been initially diagnosed. Through all those years, I saw Dr. Salvati at HSS for x-rays and never once did he push me to have surgery. He let ME decide. I had my right hip replaced in 2002, and then my left was replaced in 2003. Miraculously, that horrible aching pain in both of my hips was gone. I could walk, run and enjoy my children and my life again. I went back to the career that I love as well. The hardest step was deciding to have the surgery. However, from the minute you enter HSS, you know you are in good hands. Everyone is pleasant and kind. They also accommodated me by doing all pre-admission testing in ONE day!!! They even squeezed the MRI and pre-op class in on that day as well. I could write a book on how wonderful this hospital, staff, surgeons and nurses are..Dr Eduardo Salvati gave me my life back and I will be eternally grateful to him to the day I die. THANK YOU!!!
