On June 2, 2019, I went to my friend's house with my skateboard in my hand. We had skated a while and were on our way back to her house when I hit an uneven portion of the sidewalk and fell. I immediately knew I had broken my ankle. Off the the emergency room where they took x-rays and set my leg in a soft cast. The nurse told my parents that we should make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon because I would need surgery. We went to the orthopedist they recommended - and although he was nice and explained what the surgery would be like, my parents felt like the whole experience of being in that office was disappointing. There were dozens of people waiting for over an hour to see the doctor. My mom said it felt like we were all just a herd of cattle - being shuffled from one waiting area to another. We went home and my mom did some extensive research. She found Dr. Behrens and Hospital for Special Surgery. She was very impressed with Dr. Behrens extensive education, qualifications, research and reviews from other patients. We made the appointment and had a consultation. Dr. Behrens office was nothing like the one we'd been to. The staff was extremely professional and informative. We waited no more than 20 minutes from the time we arrived to when we saw the doctor. He was very thorough in his explanation of what I did and how he was going to fix it. He made me feel very comfortable. The day of my surgery arrived and the staff at NY Presbyterian were wonderful. They explained every step of my procedure and made sure I didn't have any questions. They kept my parents informed every step of the way. I followed Dr. Behrens instructions to remain off my feet for the next 4 weeks and then we returned for a check up. The took another x-ray and everything looked great. I was now allowed to walk in the boot I'd been in. A few weeks later I went back again - my ankle looked fantastic. Now I could walk in a soft brace. I just went back for my last visit. My ankle has healed beautifully and I have no restrictions. I may not play sports - but I am back in the game of traveling to Manhattan every day to go to school, participating in gym, and leading the same active lifestyle I had before. I thank Dr. Behrens and his staff for making me whole again!
