My wife and I live in New York's Catskill Mountains and one of our favorite activities is hiking mountain trails with our two dogs. On a hike in the summer of 2022, I stepped awkwardly on a rock or root hidden by ground cover and I severely sprained my right lateral ankle. After a full year of rest, recovery, and physical therapy, it became clear that the sprain was not going to heal on its own. I decided to seek counsel from a foot and ankle specialist at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS).
The specialist I chose at HSS was Elizabeth Cody, MD. From the beginning, it was clear to me that Dr. Cody had depth of knowledge and experience in foot and ankle surgery, and also a commitment to a positive outcome for her patients.
Full healing from the kind of surgery she performed on me can take up to a year or more. That was true for me, especially as I was 73 years old at the time of surgery.
The result? I am now back on those mountain trails, ascending and descending rocky terrain without pain or discomfort. I walk and dance and bicycle in comfort. Indeed, I have lost awareness of my right ankle which, to me, is the truest sign of recovery.
I am grateful to Dr. Cody, and all the attending medical professionals at HSS who made this surgery and recovery so successful.
