I suffered an injury to my right ankle from a ladder accident. After being diagnosed by my local orthopedic group with a fractured talus bone and subsequent avascular necrosis, I was told that the standard accepted treatment was to fuse together various bones of my injured ankle. They explained that this would permanently prevent me from flexing my right ankle but that the procedure would eliminate my pain and therefore, it was deemed to be an acceptable trade off. No other options for treatment were offered.
I am 68 years old and although I am not running road races anymore, I remain relatively active, so both my wife and I thought that his course of treatment was rather drastic and shortsighted. I began researching alternate options on my own.
Searching the internet, I found Dr. Cody at HSS. After reviewing my injury, Dr. Cody was indeed able to offer guidance on possible alternative treatments. Most involved additional steps that she would have to take in surgery as well as additional challenges for me as a patient, but all probably resulting in a better overall outcome than the original suggestion. She carefully discussed both the benefits and risks of each, including duration and limitations during recovery. With this information, we together decided on a course of action that would preserve much of my normal ankle function and lifestyle.
The surgery and recovery went completely as she planned. I am sure that Dr. Cody’s skill, patience and determination to make the extra effort contributed greatly to the success of my surgery. After my surgery, Dr. Cody religiously monitored my situation and continued to provide me with detailed information and feedback in every step of the process. Now, six months after my surgery, I have no pain and almost completely normal function of my ankle. I can confidently acknowledge a successful outcome of the course of action taken by Dr. Cody.
Dr. Cody is a competent and skilled professional who I feel is committed to the best outcome possible for her patients. I was extremely lucky to find her and I am pleased to pass on my thanks and highest recommendation.
