With regard to HSS, outstanding hospital in every way. With regard to my doctor, Joshua Dines - outstanding, caring, attentive, skilled, knowledgeable, and reliable like no other doctor who has ever treated me at any point in my life. No exaggeration.
I am currently 61 years old and had my knee replacement surgery 2 years ago. I had struggled with knee problems since an accident in college, but never received proper care and my knee continued to worsen over the years, culminating in serious arthritis and ultimately the need for a full replacement. I was referred to Dr. Dines by a close friend who raved about his surgeon's skill and personal warmth. I followed up and met with him. It was clear from the moment we met, I had made the right decision. After very careful consideration, multiple conversations, and his wise decision to wait for a few months to do the surgery, because the medical technology was about to get even better, we decided together that the time was finally right. Although the recovery was demanding and painful, Dr. Dines was there every step of the way. He returned phone calls promptly, listened carefully to some of my frustrations with physical therapy, but he also encouraged me, always letting me know the more work I did during recovery, the more I would get out of the surgery. He never dismissed me or was too busy. As a result of the outstanding surgery, the physical therapy, and the ongoing support to get through a tough recovery, my life changed dramatically. I became more physical, lost weight, felt better in general, and as I wrote to Dr. Dines last New Years Eve, I danced til 3:00 in the morning in heels for the first time in over 20 years!!! No joke. Best feeling ever. I am forever thankful for all of his care, and for having access to such a tremendous institution like Hospital for Special Surgery.
