On November 19, 2020 I began experiencing pain in my lower back. For a few weeks prior to this I had been running wind sprints on both even and bumpy, uneven surfaces as I was preparing to return to the gym. In December of 2020 I saw an orthopedic surgeon from a different hospital and was prescribed physical therapy. During the PT sessions, the pain grew progressively worse to the point that I could not continue with the exercises - and this despite taking over-the-counter pain medication. I subsequently discontinued PT and set an appointment with HSS due to its outstanding reputation in the field of orthopedics. I was examined and evaluated by Dr. Evan D. Sheha. After consultation I was referred by Dr. Sheha to receive an steroid injection, as this was the least invasive next therapeutic modality. The procedure was performed by a Dr. Daniel H. Blatz on January 26, 2021. However, unfortunately, the salutary effects of the steroid wore off after one day. After further consultation with Dr. Sheha I requested to move forward with an operation ASAP due to the unremitting radiating pain and due to the difficulty in carrying out everyday activities and functions. Dr. Sheha and his personable and very competent office manager, Viviane Potucek, were able to schedule me for pre-op shortly thereafter; and for surgery on February 25, 2021. The operation took place at HSS Orthopedics with Stamford Health. On the day of the operation, all medical and support staff worked seamlessly as a team. They all performed their respective functions in a distinctly professional, courteous, and competent manner; and were very caring and supportive. My post-op experience was equally wonderful. Following surgery and under the guidance of Dr. Sheha, I returned to physical therapy for a period of a few weeks. The best part is I am now totally pain-free and I am regaining my strength, mobility, and range of motion. I have also returned to the gym and I am following an exercise routine prescribed by Dr. Sheha. Additionally, during my post-op rehabilitation period I was able to attend a vocational school and complete a certificate program in the medical field. I am now in the process of applying for employment opportunities in my field of study. The physicians and staff at HSS are deeply invested in positive and efficacious outcomes for patients in their care. A big shout out to Dr. Sheha and all the other physicians and staff members at HSS for a great outcome regarding my medical condition.
