I tore the cartilage in my left hip playing women's rugby in college. The injury went undiagnosed for about 7 years. I underwent a hip arthroscopy in 1996, but although the surgeon removed torn pieces of cartilage, he told me that I already had developed arthritis. I suffered through the arthritis for about 15 years. It was to the point where I was taking Advil every three hours, especially in the night, and I couldn't even get my shoes or socks on by myself. I had young children and it was hard for me to bend down to tie their shoes or carry them.
Finally, I went to Dr. Su who said I was a candidate for hip resurfacing. I underwent the procedure on May 5, 2011. Within days of the surgery, I noticed that the pain I used to have all night long was gone! After the initial period of rest post-op, I started working out again. It was incredible to go to the gym and not have to take anti-inflammatory medication to get through the day. Now I am back to all my old activities: singles tennis, cardio tennis, bootcamp, hiking, tap dance, yoga, barre class, and spinning! My friends can't believe it when I tell them I am bionic! This surgery truly was a miracle!
