For years my hips always felt tight and required extra attention and stretching whenever doing sports. After a workout in the beginning of 2020, I felt a sharp pain in my right hip that continued to get worse; eventually preventing me from walking for more than 20 minutes.
I scheduled an initial consultation with Dr. Anil Ranawat at HSS, and after evaluating the MRI it was immediately obvious that a CAM impingement and labral tear was causing the pain. We discussed all the treatment options, and decided that hip arthroscopy surgery was the right course of action. Coincidentally in the time leading up to surgery on my right hip, my left hip started causing issues as well. After further evaluation, it was clear that my left hip had the same issue (CAM impingement and labral tear) and we would need hip arthroscopy on that hip as well.
Being faced with two surgeries was not easy, but with the incredible guidance from Dr. Ranawat and his PA, MaryClaire Pelletier, we developed a plan and course of action. In July 2020, I had the first surgery on my right hip. Dr. Ranawat and MaryClaire closely monitored my progress throughout the recovery, and connected me with a physical therapist they specifically knew could treat my injury. After building strength again on my right side, we decided to do the second surgery on the left hip in November 2020. By April 2021 I was fully functioning again, walking long distances (minimum 10K steps a day) and hiking with no pain. My last day of physical therapy was in June of 2021, and I’ve never felt stronger. I have more stability and flexibility in my hips than ever before, and gained a wealth of knowledge throughout the recovery process.
I can’t thank Dr. Anil Ranawat, MaryClaire and their team at HSS enough. Working with them was truly life changing. They are the most responsive team I’ve ever encountered in the medical industry, extremely knowledgeable, and provide the best care you could ever ask for. After my experience with this team, HSS will be the only hospital I recommend to anyone in the future.
