As a retired academic medical center-based pediatrician, my decision to choose HSS for my right hip replacement was based on evidence from several sources including ProPublica's surgical scorecard, Consumer Reports, and U.S. News and World Report. All rated HSS as an excellent place for a hip replacement with low rates of surgical complications and high rates of positive outcomes. No hospital in our home town of Birmingham, Alabama was rated as highly. The 70% higher volume of joint replacements at HSS compared to any other U.S. hospital assured me that the staff would be highly trained and specialized in the care required. Further, Dr. Alexiades had an excellent and reassuring bedside manner during our initial clinic visit and explained how the anterior approach was associated with more rapid recovery than the posterior approach, which was done 11 years earlier on my left hip. My confidence in Dr. Alexiades and the HSS staff was completely justified by my recent surgery and pain-free and rapid recovery. Within several weeks of surgery, I was walking normally without a cane and without any pain. No pain medicines were needed after surgery. My restored mobility and ability to walk long distances has restored the quality of my life including visits to museums and cultural festivals. We are very appreciative of the fine care we received at HSS and recommend it to anyone with hip arthritis who wants to get Back in the Game.
