From 1957 until late 2012, I participated in regular full court basketball games. In 1996, I began to experience knee problems attributed to medial meniscus tears. They were treated at my local hospital in the Hudson Valley through arthroscopic surgery after which I continued with my sports activities. However, over the years, knee pain returned, forcing me to reduce my basketball play from 3 days per week to one. My ability to walk for any distance or on hard terrains, such as concrete sidewalks, was becoming increasingly more difficult. Finally, early in 2012, I realized that something had to be done to alleviate the daily constant pain.
Three years prior to my bilateral total knee replacement surgery, a family member underwent the same procedure with the same physician, Dr. Alejandro Gonzalez Della Valle. I found him to be a patient, caring, and gifted physician. From their experience, I knew that if I ever had to have knee replacement surgery, HSS was where it had to be done and Dr. Della Valle had to be the surgeon to perform it. I have never regretted that decision and have proudly recommended it to all who have sought advice regarding knee replacement surgery. I am now back in the gym several days per week, and although I am no longer playing full court basketball ( not wanting to risk knee injury), my gym activities as well as my daily walking are remarkably pain free. We have been able to enjoy traveling Europe and the Caribbean without debilitating pain. Thank you HSS and thank you Dr. Della Valle!
