I consider myself an active senior and play racquetball and pickleball 3x/week and ski during the long NE winters - for those not familiar with pickleball, it is a competitive paddle sport that combines aspects of tennis, badminton and ping pong. It is played indoors or outdoors on a court about one-third the size of a tennis court. Not wanting to give up sports I delayed doing anything about my worsening hip pain until my family doctor advised me it was time to consider hip replacement as an option.
I researched replacement approaches and medical centers that offered various alternatives. The more I read the more I was impressed with HSS. My initial referral to HSS included my desire to explore the possibility of anterior hip replacement. I also expressed my goals which included the ability to return to pickleball, racquetball and snow skiing after recovery. My initial consultation with Dr. Danyal Nawabi and Carly Lang, PA went very well. I was pleased to have Dr. Nawabi confirm I was a good candidate for anterior hip replacement and he saw no reason I couldn’t return to an active sports lifestyle.
I underwent computer assisted anterior total hip replacement a week after my consultation. After home and outpatient physical therapy my goal was to return to playing pickleball after 3 months and to start playing racquetball after 6 months.
I have delayed posting my story until completing my 6 month follow-up but I am happy to report I have met – in fact exceeded – two of my goals and am anxiously looking forward to ski season. Thank You HSS and Dr. Nawabi for getting me Back In The Game!
