I was in my early 40's and had previously been a very active person. I ran races, played on tennis teams, golfed, skied, biked and went to the gym regularly. That all changed when my hip started hurting. I was in so much pain, I could barely walk at times, let alone play tennis. An MRI revealed that the joint was deteriorated, and that I had no cartilage and bone spurs. I needed a total hip replacement. I started doing research and found Dr. Mayman, who specialized in young, active patients and was a pioneer in robotics, using a computer assisted surgery method called Makoplasty. When I met with Dr. Mayman, he patiently answered all of my questions and addressed all of my fears. He said that I would be able to play tennis and ski again. I scheduled my surgery on the spot. HSS was very efficient, from the pre-op tests, to the surgery and recovery, I felt like HSS was run like a well oiled machine. I had very little post-op pain. I felt immediately better when I was still in the recovery room. My hip was sore from the incision, but the sharp pain was gone. 6 days post-op, I walked 1 mile. I did my physical therapy religiously, and 2 months after my surgery, I played my first tennis game. 4 months after my surgery I hiked Mt. Marcy, the highest peak in the Adirondacks. I have since hiked 2 more of the high peaks, and hope to be a 46-er one day! (There are 46 peaks over 4,000 feet). I have skied many times and play on several USTA tennis teams. After my tennis team won their division, I played 3 matches in one day at districts and won all 3! My hip felt great, no problems at all. It's been nearly 2 1/2 years since my surgery and I am so thankful to Dr. Mayman and HSS for giving my life back to me. I couldn't have prayed for a better result!
