In early December 2000, I was jogging in Ft. Tryon Park, slipped on a patch of ice, and broke my leg: a Maissoneuve fracture that included a spiral fracture of my tibia and torn ligaments throughout my ankle. After making my way to HSS, I was seen in the ER and the next day, Dr. Dziadosz operated on my leg to install a plate and two screws to hold by fibula and tibia together, allowing the ligaments to heal.

Up to that point in my life, I was only a casual runner. I'd never run more than three or four miles at a time, even when I was doing multiple sports in high school.

For six weeks I had no weight on my leg, and then started the long, arduous process of physical therapy.

Under Dr. Dziadosz's guidance, I gradually built up more strength in my leg and eventually took up running again. With his oversight, we left the screws and plate in my ankle, as it was in no way hindering my gait and did not cause any pain.

In the spring of 2022, I began training for the TCS New York City Marathon, which I completed that November: less than two years after my injury, and a month before I turned 50. I wasn't fast, but I did join the < 2% of people who completed that distance.

In November 2024, I did the NYC Marathon again, nearly a minute per mile faster than my first. I am so grateful for the outstanding care I received at HSS and from Dr. Dziadosz.
