Limb Lengthening
Daniel H. Bastian, CP Massapequa, NY
Doctor Rozbruch has given me back my active life as a husband, father, athlete and entrepreneur. As a co-owner and Certified Prosthetist at Progressive O&P on Long Island, I have dedicated my professional career to helping patients living with limb loss lead full and active lives. It’s important for my patients to see me as a role model and example of how to live life fully, because I am also an amputee.
Before turning to Doctor Rozbruch I endured four unsuccessful limb lengthening surgeries to correct a bone spur problem that left me unable to wear my prosthesis and maintain my active schedule for the past year.
Now, 51, I was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma at the age of fifteen and underwent a year of chemotherapy followed by 18 failed surgeries that resulted in an amputation. Several years later I had a skiing accident that resulted in a very short femur that later caused bone spurs to grow.
To fix the bone spur problem and improve my gait, last year (2016) I had limb lengthening done on my femur at a hospital in Florida. Unfortunately, after enduring four failed surgeries I was left with a temporary spacer installed in my residual limb which would only last 6-12 months.
I turned to Doctor Rozbruch at HSS to find a solution to my lengthening problem. He decided to install a carbon rod in my femur and allograft which lengthened my residual limb by about 5". After only 6 weeks’ post op I am walking with my prosthesis and have regained my active personal and professional life.
I am incredibly pleased with the outcome of my surgery and I cannot thank Dr. Rozbruch and the team at HSS enough for getting me back in the game.
